Throughout my career, I have witnessed this form of leadership applying control of power, simply leading by giving direction, guidelines and instruction.
Leadership to me is being able to guide people in a certain direction to reach a common goal. When it comes to drafting a leadership philosophy the key is to spend time analyzing yourself and writing down the things you believe in and value.
I was a lost soul before he came to my church. Business strategist and author John Spence has written a good blog post on the topic and in it, he gave a powerful example of the benefits of a leadership philosophy.
But as I look back on the positions I have held and the people I would consider leaders, the people I would choose to follow, they were not necessarily the higher ranked people in the organization. The wellbeing, development and engagement of staff member are integral in mission accomplishment.
I firmly believe both characteristics are the keys to effective leadership.
